When Karen Young, the founder of Oui the People, launched her brand, she knew she wanted to create something different. With a focus on inclusivity, product innovation, and a genuine connection with her customers, she was determined to make a difference in the beauty industry.
The brand's journey began with a name change in 2020 to become more inclusive. Karen noticed that many non-binary individuals and those in the process of transitioning were drawn to her products. She wanted to ensure that everyone could feel seen and heard, leading her to choose the name "Oui the People."
A core aspect of Oui the People's mission is to maintain authenticity in its push for inclusivity. According to Karen, this starts with hiring diverse voices within the brand itself. By having a diverse team working on everything from product development to marketing, the brand can maintain an inclusive perspective.
One example of Oui the People's commitment to inclusivity is the development of their signature razor. Karen wanted to create a product that would work seamlessly on the body and be safe for all skin types, including those with different levels of melanin. Through years of research and collaboration with engineers and manufacturers, she was able to develop a razor that met these criteria.
Beyond product innovation, Karen emphasizes the importance of listening to her customers' stories. She cherishes the feedback she receives, from people who feel more confident in their skin to those who appreciate the brand's inclusive approach. These stories fuel her passion for creating products that truly resonate with people from all walks of life.
As a female business owner, Karen has faced her fair share of challenges, including fundraising. However, she has successfully raised close to $5 million for her company, proving that hard work and dedication can lead to success.
When asked about her personal wellness practices, Karen admits that things have changed since becoming a mother. She now focuses on simple yet effective methods like breathing exercises and prioritizing sleep. These practices, though seemingly small, have a significant impact on her well-being. "I have a 22-month-old and now it's just about what can I actually fit in. I've taken up a breathing practice. I do a 4-7-8 and that has been fantastic."
